Maui Channel Swim - Established in 1972

The MAUI CHANNEL SWIM is the original Masters distance relay race in open water. It begins on the island of Lanai and ends at Kaanapali Beach on the Island of Maui. In between is some fine rough water and a lot of competitive long-distance swimming. Six-person teams on individual escort boats trade off swimmers after successive half-hour legs, then switch to ten-minute legs until the finish line is reached anywhere from 3 to 8 hours later depending upon sea conditions. The total distance is approximately nine and one-half miles.
